July's Pet Of The Month 2025

July's pet of the month is Buckaroo!
Buckaroo is my sweet Frenchie boy, adopted from a French Bulldog rescue. I knew he had GI issues when I brought him home in August 2022, but nothing could’ve prepared us for what came next.
By January 2023, he was in rough shape—severe hemorrhagic diarrhea, anemia, dangerously low protein levels, and just overall very sick. After working with a local internal medicine specialist, I transferred his care to UC Davis for more advanced treatment.
There, his amazing doctor took him off all previous meds and we started from scratch. He underwent a colonoscopy and biopsies, which were sent to Cornell University. The diagnosis? Histiocytic Ulcerative Colitis—a rare and aggressive disease. His biopsies revealed two strains of multi-drug-resistant E. coli wreaking havoc on his system.
As a last resort, Buckaroo started daily injections of a powerful antibiotic for about 9 weeks. During this time, he was also closely monitored by our incredible primary vet, Dr. Atkin (a UC Davis grad, now at Central Animal Hospital), who worked hand-in-hand with the UC Davis team. He received bi-weekly iron shots, frequent bloodwork, and round-the-clock care.
Fast forward to today—Buckaroo is thriving and in remission! He eats a soy-based prescription diet (no animal protein), takes daily probiotics, and lives his best life with tons of energy, dog park adventures, and cuddle time with his two rescued Frenchie siblings.
These are only a few reasons why Buckaroo is crowned pet of the month! Congrats, Buckaroo!
